Why is it expensive to advertise in the Mail compared to other newspapers?
Both the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday have a high circulation and readership, peaking at 6 million readers on a Saturday. Circulation remains stable against a declining market and our advertisers have found response to be unrivalled by any other newspaper. This is confirmed by the feedback we regularly receive:
“We are delighted with the results that we have achieved by advertising with you. The volume of responses, per pound spent, is better than any other medium that we use and the conversion rate from those leads is also better. I attribute this to the fact that your reader demographic closely fits our franchise price and format and also that you have a large readership”.
Tony Bowman, etyres.co.uk.
We also do not charge for copy handling, unlike other newspapers who have this as an additional cost to the actual cost of advertising. Because we absorb the cost of copy handing, this can be another reason why we can be more expensive than other newspapers.
There are various ways of sending your copy, depending on the advert. We can set small adverts in house, or copy can be sent to one of our repro houses.
The deadline for mono ads is 4pm two days prior to insertion. For colour ads, five days prior to insertion.
What features do you have coming up?
We publish exclusive advertising features for many of our categories. Please click here to access a listing detailing forthcoming special advertising features.
If you would like to discuss an additional feature we are happy to discuss this and see how we can help.

There are a number of ways you can increase the response to your ad – here are just some of the ways you can do this:
Make your copy work harder
Classified is a great direct response mechanism and is generally price led. Make sure you always include prices and call to actions. If you’re running a special offer, are you promoting it in your ad? Like everybody, Mail readers are looking for extra value at the moment. We have found there are many ‘magic words’ that almost always increases response rates. These words are ‘Special Offer’. Other hard-working words include ‘Buy One Get One Free, ‘Limited time’, ‘Limited Availability’, ‘Don’t Miss Out’ and, of course, ‘FREE’. If you can create a sense of urgency then you will find responses rise.
Reassure our readers
Mail readers trust advertising and content in the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday. Do you belong to any consumer-protection body like SHOPS, AIPP, ABTA or ABTOF? Consider including the logo on your ad.

Advertise on the right day
You can choose to appear on the main day for your category, or you can try to stand out on a different day of the week. Increasing amounts of advertisers have been testing out different days of the week.
Try advertising alongside a feature
Your ad could work harder if it runs as part of a bespoke editorial feature. This is because the editorial content would attract precisely the readers you want to talk to. The Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday regularly run special editorial sections generating extra reader interest. To find out about forthcoming editorial opportunities, speak to your contact or click here (new forthcoming features page on new site). If you have a suggestion, please email us.

Protecting our readers is of paramount importance to Mail Newspapers, which is why we conduct references on all new advertisers. This in turn ensures Mail readers continue to trust the advertising they see in their newspaper. If we needed to carry out references on someone, we would ask them to supply the contact details of their Bank, a solicitor/accountant and trade associates. They would also need to fill in a bank consent form. We ask for references as it gives us a good idea of what the company is like in terms of finance and also in terms of trade, so we know of any risk associated the company.
Why do we need to be a member of SHOPS if we want to sell off the page?
Protecting readers is of paramount important to the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday, which is why all advertisers who want to sell directly off the page must be members of SHOPS. This stands for Safe Home Ordering Protection Scheme and it protects the consumer when buying directly from advertisements and catalogues inserted in national newspapers. To join SHOPS, please click here.
